Thinking about pharmacy technician training is exciting. It can also bring up practical questions: Will school fit around work? What will you study? How does the externship work?
You do not need every answer before contacting a college. An admissions conversation is your chance to gather information and decide whether the program fits your goals.
If you are exploring training in Hawaii, bring these seven questions along. Write down the answers so you can build a realistic plan before enrolling.
1. What will I learn, and how will I practice?
Start with the course list. Ask how lessons connect to the skills you will practice and how instructors check your progress.
Hawaii Medical College’s Pharmacy Technician program lists courses including pharmacy calculations, pharmacology, community pharmacy practice, institutional pharmacy practice, and customer service.
Ask for an example of a typical assignment or practice activity. If math feels rusty, mention that early and ask what to review before class begins. Knowing where to start can make preparation feel more manageable.
2. What will a typical week look like?
A program’s overall length is only part of the picture. Ask for the expected weekly schedule for the class you would join, including required attendance, independent assignments, and any online components.
Then compare that schedule with your actual week. Include work shifts, family responsibilities, meals, study time, and travel.
For an Oahu commute, allow time for traffic, parking, or transit connections. If you live on another island, ask exactly which activities require attendance in Honolulu before making travel or housing plans.
3. How is the pharmacy externship arranged?
HMC’s program includes a 100-hour pharmacy externship. Before enrolling, ask when it takes place and how students are matched with sites.
Useful follow-up questions include:
- Who coordinates the placement?
- What hours might a site require?
- What requirements must I complete before starting?
- Who should I contact if a scheduling problem comes up?
Discuss any work or caregiving commitments that could affect your availability. Ask whether the externship schedule differs from the classroom schedule so you can plan for both.
4. What is the full cost of attending?
Request a written breakdown of tuition and required fees. Ask whether books, supplies, uniforms, certification exam fees, and any externship-related requirements are included or billed separately.
You can begin with HMC’s Program Credits & Costs page, then ask the team to explain the figures that apply to your intended program and start.
Build a second list for personal expenses, such as transportation, childcare, and changes to work hours. If you want to explore financial assistance, ask what options can be evaluated for your circumstances and what documents are needed.
5. How does training connect to certification?
Ask which certification exam the program prepares students for, what preparation is included, and who helps explain the application process.
Completing a college program and earning a professional certification are separate steps. For the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s Certified Pharmacy Technician credential, candidates must meet eligibility requirements and pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.
Ask admissions to walk you through the current pathway and direct you to the certifying organization’s requirements. Also clarify whether exam registration and fees are included in your program costs.
6. What support can I use if I get stuck?
You may feel confident about customer service but nervous about calculations. Or you may be returning to school after several years away.
Tell admissions what concerns you. Ask what academic support is available, how students request help, and when that help can be accessed.
Be specific: “If I struggle with a calculation assignment, who would I contact?” or “What should I do if my work schedule changes?” Clear answers help you understand how to seek support before a small problem grows.
7. What should I have ready before I enroll?
Ask for a checklist of required documents, deadlines, and next steps. Confirm which items are needed for admission and which may be required later for the externship.
Before ending the conversation, summarize what you heard. Check the schedule, costs, outstanding questions, and the person you should contact next.
You do not have to make every decision during one conversation. The goal is to leave with enough information to make a thoughtful choice.
