Join us in celebrating 15 years of Hawai‘i’s accredited, accessible, and supportive vocational education, preparing students for successful careers in the healthcare field.
We’ve come a long way since our first year serving students. Hawaii Medical College (HMC) first opened its doors on May 10, 2007, in a communal office space. Over the next few years, we grew out of our original home, with classrooms and clinical spaces spanning multiple floors in our current building. When COVID hit, we changed with the times again, converting programs to predominantly online formats to ensure students could continue learning despite the pandemic’s challenges. Now, we help roughly 300 students graduate per year.
As our President and CEO, Ashton Cudjoe, stated, “We are very proud to continue to offer students a track to stable, in-demand jobs through the vocational training we provide. Helping students succeed is paramount to our mission.” Our staff’s dedication to students’ success and well-being has endured all the changes we’ve made since 2007. They know what it’s like to be in our candidates’ shoes. In fact, two of our current staff members were students in our first graduating class. Our certification and high pass rates are just one testament to the ways HMC is there for our students as they choose their career paths. HMC also assists our students beyond graduation, helping with job placement for both recent graduates and alumni.
Now, more than ever, careers in the healthcare field are in demand, with openings perfect for new graduates. HMC deeply understands the needs of Hawai‘i’s healthcare industry and the education needed to succeed within it. We currently offer Diploma and Degree programs, including Clinical Medical Assistant, Healthcare Administration Billing & Coding, Advanced Nurse Aide, and Business Administration & IT. Diploma-level programs take 12 to 15 months, while Degree-level Programs take 22 to 24 months to complete.
We have always known that making the decision to invest in one’s education can be daunting. We offer support with financial aid to make affording an education at HMC as simple as possible. We also offer students the use of a laptop computer, Microsoft Office 365 software, and the training they need to use these tools effectively. Once students complete their program, the computer is theirs to keep so that they can continue to build upon their education on their own. These supports, along with our staff’s commitment to students’ progress, have helped candidates from diverse backgrounds graduate into fruitful careers.
We are grateful for the opportunity we’ve had over the last 15 years to serve and prepare students for their vital roles across Hawai‘i’s healthcare industry. Thank you to the dedicated students and staff who make HMC the leading vocational college it is today.
